Memory Text: “ ‘I call heaven and earth as witnesses today against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing, therefore choose life, that both you and your descendants may live’ “ (Deuteronomy 30:19, NKJV).
Everyone wants life but how we chose it matters, if we want to truly have life it is not by putting our hope on something that in the end is going to fail us as. Sandy though she died wanted to live on in the future and so she made a plan to have her brain preserved till in the future when technology is advanced enough to upload her brain to a computer and then she lives again. What we put our hope on for life determines whether we will truly get the life or not.
What options did God present to Adam and Eve with regards to life?
God planted a tree of life whose fruit had the power of perpetuating life and another tree in the midst of the garden whose fruit has the power of giving the knowledge of good and evil. The eating of this fruit causes death. Adam had the choice of life and death because of the existence of these trees.
Is there any middle ground for choosing life or death?
There is no middle ground in making the choice of life or death, it is either life or death. John 3:16 says, “…whosever believes shall have everlasting life” whosever doesn’t will die, there is no room for compromise.
What choices were presented to Ancient Israel and what is peculiar?
The choice of life and good, death and evil as recorded in Deuteronomy 30:15 were the choices given to Israel. The peculiar thing is that there is no neutrality in making these two choices, it is either life and all the benefits it carries or death and all its consequences.
Why is choosing life not supposed to be too hard?
Choosing life is not supposed to be hard because it is not kept in an unreachable place, it is in our minds and hearts. God has promised to bless us according to Deuteronomy 30:1-10, it didn’t really matter if they disobeyed or not, God had made a promise to bless them and in this blessing, we will be able to express our gratitude by doing good and choosing life.
What is worship so crucial in determining the choice of life?
If we want the life we have to worship the One who gives life, worshiping any other thing only brings punishment and death. God is worthy of our worship as our creator and Redeemer. There is no middle ground, we either worship God who brings life or worship, other gods, with the natural consequence of death.
Choosing life or death are both easy, we can choose life easy because we have God’s word in our hearts already and the Spirit always tells us what to do that is right, choosing death is easy too because we live in a sinful world filled with many reasons to do wrong. However, we are to choose life by doing what God says, because the wages of sin is death and there is no middle ground for these two choices. I pray God strengthens us to choose life that we may live in Jesus’ name.
