Lesson 4 Review: The Cost of Rest

Lesson 4 The Cost of Rest

Introduction

Memory Text: “Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me” (Psalm 51:10, NKJV).

People pay to just be in places like an internet-free room or a very quiet place just to have rest of mind. However, what is really the cost of finding rest in God, because it is only when we find rest in God that we can be assured of being free from restlessness.

What opened the door for temptation for David?

Not being where He was supposed to be opened the door for temptation for David. He was supposed to be in the battlefield but He sent his army and stayed back.

What is the crucial lesson there for us to learn in 1 Samuel 11?

No matter how high our positions are on earth, no matter how much freedom our position gives us, we are still under God’s law.

Why Nathan must have chosen to tell a story rather than naming and shaming David directly?

He wanted David to fully understand the pain the evil he had committed had felt, seeing that David had a highly developed sense of justice and integrity. The story also is one David could easily relate seeing He was a former shepherd.

Why David responds with: “I have sinned against the Lord” rather than against Bathsheba?

Any sin that makes us restless is an affront against God.

What are we expected to do when we lose that rest we have in God to our sinfulness?

We are to confess our sins and plead for forgiveness and God in His infinite love and mercies will forgive us and restore back that rest.

Why did David have to ask for God to cleanse him with hyssop and create a new spirit within him?

David realizes that just as he had sinned with Bathsheba He can also repeat the same sin again and so he asks for a new heart from God, the new one that is free from sin.

What does God need from us in addition to confessing our sins, for us to be forgiven and given a new spirit?

A contrite and a broken spirit is a sacrifice God’s needs from us (Psalm 51:17, NKJV).

In Conclusion,

We all have situations that may cause us to sin against God and hence lose that rest that comes from God. However, the cost for regaining that rest is a contrite heart, a broken heart and a plea for forgiveness and God in His love and mercies will grant us that forgiveness, recreate us and give us the true rest in Jesus’ name.
