Lesson 10 Review: The New Covenant

Lesson 10 The New Covenant

Memory Text: “ ‘Behold, the days are coming, says the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Judah’ “ (Jer 31:31, RSV).

The new covenant is nothing so different from the old covenant, the covenant basis, the conditions and the promises are the same. Just like a box of detergent having a “New” inscribed on the side but the word, “New” is the only new thing in the product, there is nothing else new.

Who instigates the new covenant?

God instigated the old covenant and He also instigated the new covenant.

What was the problem with the old covenant that called for a new one?

The problem with the old covenant was not that it was invalid or old. The problem instead was that it was broken.

What is the foundation of the new covenant?

The foundation of the new covenant is one that is accompanied by the spirit of God in us.

Does it mean that the new covenant is for only the descendants of Abraham based on Jeremiah’s statement on the new covenant made for the house of Israel?

The covenant whether new or old was never made at the exclusion of the gentiles. The only requirement for partaking in this covenant is by agreeing to enter into it.

What is the difference between the old and the new covenant?

The difference between the old and new covenant lies in the fact that the sacrifices in the old covenant are only revealed in animals whereas sacrifices in the new are revealed in the death of Jesus Christ and His high-priestly service. The salvation offered in both is the same.

Why is there no salvation found in the sacrifice of animals?

The sacrifice of animals met their fulfillment in Christ’s ultimate sacrifice on the cross.

In Conclusion,

The new covenant is a more complete covenant it is one that is written in our hearts and it is one where we do not need animal sacrifices, it is one where Jesus pays the ultimate sacrifice. The new covenant is for all who agree to take part in it and I pray that we partake in this new covenant in Jesus’ name.
